Algebra

For maths we are doing algebra.  Today for algebra we had a problem solving activity involving a shortage of tent pegs.  Here is the problem.
The youth group are having a camp. they needed to put up tents for each team. Usually it takes eight large pegs to hold up each of their tents. This time they have a problem. They are very short on large tent pegs.

Leader: "Find some ways to put up tents that will save pegs" (Talking to the groups).

We had to work with a classmate to find a least three ways to put up ten tents.  Then we had to find out which of the ways used the least amount of pegs.

Katie and I made a way that only used 39 pegs but then Brooke came and looked at our layout and suggested that we could take some pegs away and join them to others.  Our second layout came to 36 pegs. The white bits of paper is the tents and the green counters are the pegs.  We had the least amount of pegs in the end and some people got up to 60 pegs altogether.

Thai,Maori numbers

In the term 2 holidays Mrs Parkinson went on a trip to Thailand and she learned lots off things and in maths she taught us Thai numbers. We now know that Thai numbers are similar to Maori numbers because they use the same format e.g in Maori, fourteen is tekau ma wha because tekau is ten and 4 is wha and in Thai, fourteen is sip see because sip is ten and see is four. We like Hearing about Mrs Parkinson's adventure and if you would like to here about it come into room12 and we will show you the pictures on the board.

Poster on Roman Nurmals

Over the last couple of days the porohita group have been making posters on Roman Nurmals or Maori or normal time. We had to buddy up with a partner and I chose Brooke and Brooke chose me. We decide to do Roman Nurmals. We did a draft in Brooke's maths book. Then we wrote facts about the Roman Nurmals we learnt. We then did a fancy title, a nice border and a quiz. Then we moved onto a our good copy it was on A3 paper . Then we complied our good copy and it looks awesome. Then we shared our posters to the others in the porohita group. This was cool.

Decimals

Today and the last couple of days I learned decimals with the hexagons group. .We use the deci-pipes. I don't know lots of decimals but it is so cool to learn something new.I would like to learn how to add and subtract decimals because you need to know that so that you can add up money. This photo shows how I made`2.45 on the deci- pipes. That mean 2 wholes, 4 tenths and 5 hundredths.
